The Faraway Paladin

The Faraway Paladin is a Fantasy and Isekai Japanese manga and anime series. The manga artist, Mutsumi Okuhashi illustrated whereas the writer, Kanata Yanagino wrote the anime. On September 25, 2017, the manga was serialized online on Overlap’s comic Gardo website.

Moving towards the anime, on the 9th of October 2021, the anime aired on the English Network, Animax. As of now, 24 episodes of the anime have been released.

Main Plot

The main plot of the anime is based on a single human living in the city of the dead, Will. Will is raised by the three undead people named the hearty skeletal warrior, Blood; the graceful mummified priestess, Mary; and the crotchety spectral sorcerer, Gus. The three of them love him very much as well as teach him the things that they know.

But one day Will wants to know various mysteries like Who am I? whereas he has to learn about the love and kindness of good gods. After knowing it all he takes his first step as a paladin.

The Faraway Paladin Episode 1

The first episode of The Faraway Paladin starts with the boy falling deep into the water and talking about the pain that he faces. A child appears in front of the Blood Skeleton teaching him about the god. The Blood Skeleton shows the fire from the word. The word how to start a fire and the word how to stop it. The kid also seems to know more as he tells him the power is magic. As he passes by he watches the statue of various gods such as the god of technology, the goddess of water, etc.

Another dead woman (Mary) appears and asks him if is he curious about the god in front of him and tells him everything about the god he was watching. Mary feds Will with the delicious food and tells him that he has grown bigger. If he wants to go hunt, well he does not know about hunting but the dead teach him that too. But Mary denies it and tells them that he is still young for that.

The Skeleton was teaching him was impressed as he was able to read and write at the age of 3. Mary keeps a secret about how the bread is made. Will says that he has only met these three people since he was born. The many questions hit him as to why are they undead and many more. Whereas, Will also keeps a secret about the memories of his previous life. Though he has memories he can’t focus on them.

Afterward, he seems to grow younger and has trained with Blood Skeleton. Also, he gets a good education and shares about the day with Mary. Moreover, Blood Skeleton wants him to become as powerful as he can. While doing physical education Will feels a little bit hesitant as he seems injured by his arm. At the end of the episode, Will becomes ill and Mary wants him to smile. Will admits that it is his fault.

Main Characters

William G. Maryblood

William G. Maryblood is the main protagonist and is also known as “Will”. At present, he is born with memories of his past, raised by a group of undead until he becomes an adult. The only reason he was taken by a demon is to sacrifice him for breaking the seal placed upon the High King. Recalling his memories he remembers his life in Japan but only recalls the least of the events.

The Japanese voice for the character is provided by the Japanese voice actress Maki Kawase. Maki is also affiliated with Arts Vision. Moving towards the English dubbed version, the voice is provided by the American voice actress Erica Mendez. Some of her projects include Erased, Charlotte, and Berserk.

Gracefeel

Gracefeel is the god associated with flame and external flux. Also, Gracefeel is the protector of William. At the union age, she has many followers but after the great collapse, she falls for a mysterious second-string diety. Previously, her elder sister also helped guide the soul.

The Japanese voice for the character is contributed by the Japanese actress, voice actress, and singer Aoi Yabusaki. Aoi is also known by her stage name Aoi Yūki. There are many animes she has provided the voice for some of them are Hyōka, Buddy Complex, and Sword Art Online 2.

Meneldor

Meneldor is half-elf and a very good friend of William. While William is having training or expedition he provides William his company. Being born in grassland, the forest where Erin lives. Due to his mixture of elf and human blood, he can’t exist there so it makes him run away as an adventurer. One day, his member betrayed him and even poisoned his food. Later he found the person and killed him which made him lose his comrades. With fewer number comrades later he became a local hunter in the forest of Beast Woods.

The Japanese voice for the character is portrayed by the Japanese voice actor Ayumu Murase. Ayumu is affiliated with the agency VIMS. Heading towards the English dubbed version, the American voice actor Griffin Puatu. In this anime world, he is popular for providing a voice for anime like Tokyo Revengers, The God of High School, and Fire Emblem Heroes.

Mary

In the anime, The Faraway Paladin, Mary also acted as the mother of Williams but not a biological mother. For Goddess Mater, she shows a high amount of commitment. As a kind and caring she always wants William to be happy. For the earth-mother, she has a place in her heart but also feels guilty as she returns as dead by contacting Stagnate.

The Japanese voice actor, Yui Horie voiced the character. She is also a singer by profession. She is also affiliated with VIMS and Starchild. For the English dubbed version, the American voice actress, Kathleen Mclnerney voiced the character. Her stage name is Veronica Taylor. Some of her projects include Berserk, Seven of Seven, and One Piece.

Stagnate

Stagnate is the malice goddess. He is in association with the dead. She is the opponent William and is interested in his growing development. By observing his journey she stated him as her enemy. He contract with Augustus, Blood, and Mary to become undead in exchange he would wipe out the demons in which High-King was sealed. She is the Goddess of Undeath, she was previously a virtuous goddess who helped guide the souls of the dead alongside her younger sister. However, she strayed from her path as she grew tired of the rise and fall of heroes and epidemiological. to follow her ideas and use her power of undeath to eternalize her image of heroes.

The Japanese voice artist, Hiroki Takahasi portrayed the character. In addition to voice acting, he is also a singer and actor. Also, The French Voice actor, Maxime Donnay dubbed the English version of the character. Some of his projects include One Piece, His and Her Circumstances, and Naruto Shippuden.

Blood

Blood is from the race of the skeleton. Previously, his name was the War Ogre. Also, he is the father of Williams but not biological. He may be a hot-blooded warrior, who cherishes to look for fight and experience. His stagnant body drove him to be a shell of his previous self but more astute as he lived long sufficient as an undead.

He cherishes his cultivated child beyond a reasonable doubt and continuously supports his development as a warrior in arranging for Will to ensure himself. He and Augustus adore betting and once they both drag William to bet as well. At the time, Mary scolded them and asked them not to repeat it.

The Japanese voice artist, Katsuyuki Konishi voiced the character. Moving towards the English dubbed version, the English voice for the character is provided by the American voice actor William Bill Butts. Bill works with various talent management companies including FUNimation Entertainment, Bang Zoom! Entertainment, Sound Cadence Studios, Studio Nano, Studiopolis, and NYAV Post.

Augustus

Augustus is a specter and un-biological father of Williams. In the anime, The Faraway Paladin is referred to as the Wandering Sage.

After the overcome of Stagnate, Gracefeel advertised Augustus an expansion to his life following the death contract, which was almost to run out due to Stagnates nonappearance. As it were Augustus acknowledged the expansion whereas the two others chose their life forces to be reused back into the typical life cycle of passing and ending.

He is unforgiving and inconsiderate to everybody but cherishes his companions and family. Profound down Gus needs nothing but information which leads him to have no connection to his ancient body. His pride as a magician tends to overpower his sense of lowliness driving him to act like a self-important ancient man.

The Japanese voice actor, Nobuo Tobita contributed a voice to the character. In this world of anime, he is popular for providing a voice for anime like Accel World, Bleach, and Captain Tsubasa.

Heading toward the English dubbed version, the voice artist, Kirk Thornton voiced the character. Thornton is also a director, and scriptwriter Kirk by profession.
