The Rising of the Shield Hero

The Rising of The Shield Hero is a dark fantasy and isekai Japanese anime and light novel series. The manga artist, Seira Minami illustrated the manga. On February 5, 2014, the manga was serialized in the Monthly Comic Flapper magazine. Aiya Kyū is the writer of the manga.

Moving towards anime, it aired on 9th January 2019 in Funimation and Crunchyroll. The director of the anime is Takao Abo.

When will The Rising of the Shield Hero Season 2 released?

The first season of The Rising of the Shield Hero was completed in 2019. The second season of the anime will release in April 2022.

The second season of the anime is based on the light novel Kodakawa Light Novel Expo 2020. The director, Masato Jinbo will be directing The Rising of the Shield Hero. It will also be aired on Crunchyroll.

The Rising of the Shield Hero- Main Plot

The anime describes the story of a university student, Naofumi Iwatani. Along with will Naofumi, three other heroes, Ren, Motoyasu, and Itsuki have been summoned to the Kingdom of Melromarc for unexplained reasons. They are supposed to protect the kingdom against waves of demons.

Some questions such as the causes of these demon waves, their numbers, and their way back are still unknown to Naofumi.  In the middle of all these questions, Naofumi is accused of rapping Myne, one of the kingdom’s princesses. This leads him to a bad impression on the people living in the Melromarc.

Despite such difficulty, he went on his quest to fight against the demon waves. Later, Naofumi purchases Raphtalia, a demi-human slave on the point of death. Raphtalia also provided a company to Naofumi.

As the waves keep on approaching the kingdom, Naofumi and Raphtalia must save the kingdom and people from their unfortunate fate.

The Rising of the Shield Hero- Characters

1. Naofumi Iwatani

Naofumi Iwatani is the main protagonist of the series. Naofumi went to the library one day to save money and find the book named The Record of the Four Holy Weapons. While reading it, he lost consciousness and was transported to another realm. In another world, he was summoned as a shield hero. Animals have been instinctively drawn to him since he was a child. Any animal he came across was fond of him, and they acted more kind towards him than most people.

The Japanese voice for the character is provided by the Japanese voice actor Kaito. Kaito is affiliated with the talent management company, Stay Luck.

Moving towards the English dubbed version, Billy Kametz portrayed the character. Currently, he is also working as a studio guide for Universal Studios Hollywood.

2. Raphtalia

Raphtalia is the main female character of the series. She is the first person who spent a lot of time with shield hero. Despite the fact that she was bought as a slave, Naofumi never mistreated Raphtalia. Later, she developed a great bond with her master, Naofumi.

Later, she traveled toward another world and acquired the Vassal Katana, Katana Spirit of the Vassal Weapon. That transformed her into the Katana Hero.

Throughout the story, she has undergone considerable transformations. Raphtalia has first seemed like a young girl with long, messy hair and a dirty cotton gown. After being purchased by Naofumi, he made her neat and even provided the clothes. Many of her friends were bought by Idol Rabier, who took pleasure in torturing the helpless demi-humans.

The Japanese voice, Asami Seto contributed her voice to the character. Currently, she is a voice talent of StarCrew

Heading towards the English dubbed version, the American voice actress, Erica Mendez provided the voice.

3. Malty S Melromarc

Malty S Melromarc is the main antagonist of the anime. Melromarc is a formal princess of Melromarc. Her royal family rejected her as a royal member when her allegations against Naofumi came out as false.  Eventually, she also betrayed the other three heroes, becoming a wanted criminal.

However, she also has her own back story which is sad. Her father, Aultcray Melromarc XXXII, treated her rotten when she was growing up. He used to allow the elder brother to abuse. Despite knowing all the truth, Aultcray never punished her elder brother.

The Japanese voice actor, Sarah Emi Bridcutt voiced Malty. Sarah works for Production Ace as a voice artist. Some of her projects include Monster Girl Doctor, Date A Live, and Kantai Collection.

Whereas, the English voice for the character is provided by the American voice actress, Faye Mata.

4. Melty Q Melromarc

Melty Q Melromarc is the Crown Princess of Melromarc. After the death of her mother, she will be crowned as the new Queen of Melromarc. She also fought a war against Faubrey, the most powerful country. The royal family selected her as the crowned princess when her elder sister conspired against, Naofumi.

She also promoted the shield hero, Naofumi Iwatani to a noble rank, Archduke. However, that decision backfired her as that made him her fiancee. Also, that made Naofumi the most powerful person of the kingdom after her.

The Japanese voice, Maaya Uchida voiced the character, Melty. Uchida is also a professional singer. At the 8th Seiyu Award, she won the Best New Actress Award.

Also, the American voice actor, Jackie Lastra portrayed the character for the English dubbed version. Like Uchida, she is also a singer by profession.

5. Motoyasu Kitamura

Motoyasu Kitamura is also summoned to another world like Naofumi. In another world, he is a spear hero. Among the four legendary heroes, Motoyasu is the approachable one. He is highly devoted to his allies.

Motoyasu was a student at a University in his previous life in another world. At the time, he used to date many girls at a single time. In other words, he was a ladies’ man. Before he realized it, the situation had escalated into violence, and he was stabbed to death.

Acting as a flirt, he had often asked Raphtalia and Filo to join his team while leaving Naofumi.

The Japanese voice actor, Makoto Takahashi provided the voice to the character. Currently, she works for Atomic Monkey as a voice artist.

The English for the character is provided by the voice actor, Xandus Mobus. In this anime world, he is famous for providing a voice for anime like Mob Psycho 100, Erased, and Jujutsu Kaisen.

6. Itsuki Kawasumi

Itsuki Kawasumi is a bow hero, one of the legendary heroes. Like Naofumi, he was also summoned from another world. Itsuki used to live in an alternative world where people are born with supernatural powers before the incident.

He believes that he is the strongest among all the Heroes. He undertakes covert operations to assassinate corrupt aristocrats and save towns, nearly always for the honor.  Furthermore, he possesses the power of accuracy, he can hit the target very accurately if it is not blocked.

The Japanese voice actor, Yoshitaka Yamaya voiced the character. As of now, he is working for the First Wind Production as a voice actor. Prior to that, he used to be part of the voice artist company, Line.

Moving towards the English dubbed version, the American voice actor Erik Scott Kimerer voiced the character.

7. Ren Amaki

Ren Amaki is a sword hero among four legendary heroes. He was also summoned from another world to fulfill his duty as a hero. Ren comes from an alternate Japan before that.

While comparing among other heroes, he didn’t treat the Shield Hero harshly. Yet, he is horrible at interacting with others. Also, his activities as a solo player cause regular issues.

Ren became involved in a murder case while driving home from school one day. The murder case was infamous in the town where he lived. Ren talked about how he saved his best friend and how the offender was locked up. Suddenly, somebody stabbed him and he died due to heavy blood loss.  Before finding who the person was, people summoned him into another world.

The Japanese voice actor, Yoshitsugu Matsuoka provided the voice to the character. Currently, Yoshitsugu works for the talent agency, I’m Enterprise.

Heading towards the English dubbed version, the American voice actor Alan Lee provided the voice.

8. Filo

 

Filo is the filolial queen. Along with Raphtaila, Naofumi also purchased Filo. Later, she developed as the Filolial Queen. During the journey of Naofumi, she developed a close bond with him and Second Princess Melty Q Melromarc.

As the Filolial Queen, she possesses special abilities. she also can change into human form. Prior to her ability to change the form, Filo acted like any other normal animal. she eats a lot and shows a lot of affection to Naofumi Iwatani in the Filolial form.

Filo hatched from a monster egg that Naofumi Iwatani obtained from Beloukas, a slave trader.

The Japanese voice actor, Rina Hidaka voiced the character in the series. She works for the talent management company, Office Osawa. Her projects include Sword Art Online, Black Bullet, and Fire Emblem Heroes.

The voice actor, Brianna Knickerbocker portrayed the character in the anime.
