Shenmue the Animation

Shenmue is an action and adventure Japanese television series known as Shenmue the Animation. The anime is based on the Shenmue video game series by Yu Suzuki and published by Sega.

Moving towards the anime, the anime was first aired on February 6, 2022, on the English Network, Adult Swim. The director Chikara Sakurai directed the anime and was written by Kinto Shimoyama.

Shenmue the Animation- Main Plot

The main plot of the anime is based on Hazuki Ryou. Hazuki witnessed his own father’s murder at his family dojo. He dedicated himself to finding the person who killed his father leads him to the streets of Yokosuka. And arriving in Hong Kong from Japan in an illegal way. For his revenge, he even learns martial and becomes the ultimate martialist.

Shenmue the Animation- Characters

Ryo Hazuki- Shenmue the Animation

Ryo Hazuki is the main protagonist of Shenmue the Animation. Hazuki is a young teen who lives in Yokosuka, Japan. At the age of 3, his mother died from an illness. From the age of 7, he learned martial arts from his father. Lan Di killed his father and stole the Dragon Mirror. For revenge, he goes on a journey throughout his hometown. Moreover, he also developed feelings for a girl at his child’s age but his friend used to tease him. For this, he fought with his friend and from that time he stayed away from girls.

The Japanese voice for the character is provided by the Japanese voice actress Natsumi Wakasa.

Moving towards the English dubbed version, the American voice actor Austin Tindle provided the voice. Some of his projects include My Hero Academia, Tokyo Ghoul, and Assassination Classroom.

Longsun Zhao

Longsun Zhao is the main antagonist of Shenmue the Animation. Zhao is also known as Lan Di. Also, he is a high-ranking member of the Chinese cartel known as the Chi You Men. Chi You Men is led by four members they are Niao Sun (Yan Di), Gentei (Xuan Di), and Koutei (Hao Di). Being the leader of it they are also known as the Heaven Emperor. By killing Lwao he steals the dragon mirror. Lwao was killed by him because Lwao killed his father and it was an act of revenge.

The Japanese voice for the character is contributed by the Japanese voice actor, narrator, and radio personality Takahiro Sakurai.

Heading towards the English dubbed version, the American voice actor Scott Gibbs provided the voice. In this anime world, he is known for providing his voice for anime like Parasyte, Food Wars, and Haikyuu!!.

Iwao Hazuki

Iwao Hazuki is the father of Ryo Hazuki who got killed inside his dojo. Iwao is a man of great morals who values commitment to one’s beliefs, corrects wrongs, and above all trusts. His sole interest is calligraphy, which he frequently employs while writing letters and postcards. In searching for his friend Kai and to learn martial arts he went to China too. To his son, he also started to teach martial arts at Hazuki Dojo. Only little is known about Iwao’s wife that Ryo was a child when she died.

The Japanese voice for the character is portrayed by the Japanese actor and voice actor Takayuki Sugō.

Whereas, the English voice for the character is provided by the American voice actor Luis Galindo. Luis is affiliated with Seraphim Digital and Sentai Filmworks.

Shenhua Ling

Shenhua Ling is a teenage girl. She was born into a rich family who lived at temples. Her parents named her after the flower of the Shenmue tree. The tree was outside her house. Due to unknown events, her parents died. Which was even misunderstood or unknown by her as she does not remember them at all. Then, she was raised by Yunshen Yuan as a father. Despite, her presence being a mystery, she highly influences Ryo. Ryo and Shenhua have a good bond with each other.

The Japanese voice for the character is played by the Japanese voice actress Haruka Terui. Haruka is affiliated with Aoni Production.

Also, the English voice for the character is provided by the American voice actress Natalie Rial. Natalie has also worked for Sentai Filmworks and Sound Cadence Studios.

Shigeo Yamagishi

Shigeo Yamagashi is an old resident of Sakuragaoka. Even more, he is a friend of Iwao Hazuki. They used to be together and have a drink. He also wants to sake his drinks to his son Ryo Hazuki. In martial arts, he is very perfect as he learned it from his childhood. At the age of 30, the military recruited him.

h After completing his military he went back to his wife to Saluragaoka because his wife loves to watch cherry trees.

The Japanese voice for the character is voiced by the Japanese voice actor Jun’ichi Sugawara.

The American voice actor Carl Masterson provides the English voice for Shigeo Yamagishi.

Chai

Chai is the low-ranked member of the Chinese cartel, Chi You Men. By stalking Ryo Hazuki, he learns about the existence of the Phoenix mirror. He is the central antagonist of anime whereas in the game series, he is the main boss. Even he worked with Lan Di to impress him and learn about the Phoenix mirror. Further completing his goal, he became involved with Ryan and the Mad Angels.

The Japanese voice for the character is provided by the Japanese voice actor Yoshimitsu Shimoyama. Some of his projects include Naruto, Black Butler, and Vinland Saga.

Moving towards the English dubbed version, the English voice is provided by the American voice actor Greg Ayers. Greg has also worked for ADV Films, Funimation, and Sentai Filmworks.

Nozomi Harasaki

• Height: 164 cm

Nozomi Harasaki is a young woman who lives in Yokosuka, Japan during the original Shenmue. Ryo Hazuki’s first love interest, as well as a close friend and classmate. She has a crush on him, but Ryo has mixed feelings about Ryo.

Masayuki Fukuhara

• Height: 173 cm

Masayuki Fukuhura is known as Ryo Hazuki. Ryo is a student of Hazuki Residence where he learned Martial Arts from Iwao Hazuki. Fuku-san was in the Dojo with Iwao on the day of the incident when Lan Di came. Fuku-san is thrown out of the Dojo just as Ryo arrives, and he passes out shortly after. He is a year or two older than Ryo, but he doesn’t appear to be as adept in martial arts and may be clumsy at times.

The Japanese voice actor, Satoru Ito portrayed the character,

Whereas, the English voice for the character is provided by the American voice actor Ben McLaughlin. Ben also works for Funimation and Sentai Filmworks.

Ine Hayata

• Height: 155 cm

Ine Hayata is also known as Ine-San. Hayata is charged in the Hazuki residence for day-to-day functions. On the day Lan Di arrived in the Hazuki Dojo, Ine-san was present and was attacked, or at the very least knocked down, by either Lan Di or the guys in black suits. To cope with Iwao Hazuki’s death, she works hard and keeps herself busy to prevent depression. All the time she becomes very worried about Ryo and his revenge. But later she realized he needed to do that and was ready to do anything if he needed her help.

The Japanese voice for the character is played by the Japanese voice actress Mayumi Karyou.

Also, the English voice for the character is provided by the American voice actress, Joanne Bonasso. She works for Sentai Filmworks.

Tom Johnson

Tom Johnson is the owner of Tom’s Hot Dog. Tom attracts customers with his catchy dance moves. Though he was born in America he wants to stay in Japan after traveling the globe. Honey Jackson is his girlfriend who is also from America. Moreover, he is also a good friend of Ryo Hazuki.

The Japanese voice actor, Akihito Tajima voiced the character.

The English voice for the character is provided by the American voice actor Shannon Reed.
