Black Lagoon

Black Lagoon is a crime, girls with guns, and thriller Japanese anime and manga series. The manga artist, Rei Hiroe illustrated the anime. Also, he is the writer of the anime. On April 19, 2002, Shogakukan’s seinen manga magazine, Monthly Sunday Gene-X serialized the manga.

Moving towards the anime, it first aired on April 9, 2006, on the English network Animax Asia. The writer, Sunao Katabuchi wrote for anime. Also, he happens to be the director of the anime.

Black Lagoon- Main Plot

The anime describes the context of the place in Thailand, Roanapur. Roanapur is a dirty, crime-ridden city in Thailand. At where the prey of corruption is already covered. Even the authorities and churches. The city is infamous as the center of illegal activities and operations. The local crime syndicates operate various illegal activities in the city.

Rokuro Okajima is a regular Japanese businessman who has been leading a no excitement and routine life until a delivery trip to Southeast Asia offers him a break. Apart from this, Rokuro gets kidnapped by Black Lagoon, a mercenary group operating in Roanapur. His business trip swiftly takes a turn for the worst. In the work they fail, the group wants to use him as a bargaining chip. After being abandoned and betrayed by his old master, Rokuro wants to join Black Lagoon. In addition, he must immediately add a new condition to his upcoming circumstances and prepare for the threat of bloodshed and suffering if he is to survive.

Further, Black Lagoon is a nonstop, powerful and dynamic group that explores the depths of human good and bad behavior. However, Rokuro struggles to maintain his ideals and philosophies as he evolves from a businessman to a merciless money-oriented person.

Black Lagoon- Characters

1. Rebecca Lee Of Black Lagoon

Rebecca Lee is also known as Revy and Two Hands. She was born in the China Town district of New York City. Ravy was raised by an abusive and alcoholic father. Also, Revy quit school at the middle school. One day due to her father’s actions, she was arrested, tortured, and even raped by a corrupt police officer. After returning, home she killed her father with the pillow as a silencer. But it is unknown how she ended up in Roanapur.

The Japanese voice for the character is provided by the Japanese voice actress Megumi Toyoguchi. Megumi is affiliated with 81 Produce.

Moving towards the English dubbed version, the Canadian voice actress Maryke Hendrikse provided the voice.

2. Rokuro Okajima of Black Lagoon

Rokuro Okajima is also known as Rock. He was a businessman who turned into one of the members of Black Lagoon. Also, he looks kind and a humble person. At the Lagoon Company, he is responsible for management, translation, and negotiation. Even more, he is very skilled in Geology and chemistry. Because he has worked in the resource department in Asahi Industries. Whereas, Revy shows a rough attitude towards him.

The Japanese voice for the character is contributed by the Japanese actor, voice actor, and singer Daisuke Namikawa. Daisuke is affiliated with Stay Luck.

Heading towards the English dubbed version, the Canadian voice actor Brad Swaile provided the voice. Some of his projects include Death Note, Dragon Ball Z, and InuYasha.

3. Rosarita Cisneros

Rosarita Cisneros is also known as Roberta. Roberta is a Colombian maid working at Lovelace Family. For four years she has served the family. Also, she admitted that she has killed children and women in the name of revolution. Moreover, she was in Roanapur to kill her master. Although, she was not good at cleaning and cooking. She developed a good bonding with Garcia Lovelace, who is the son of the Lovelace family.

The Japanese voice for the character is portrayed by the Japanese actress, voice actress, and singer Michie Tomizawa.

Whereas, the English voice for the character is provided by the American voice actress Tabitha St. Germain.

4. Sofiya Pavlovna

Sofia Pavlovna is known as Balalaika. Balalaika is the owner of Hotel Moscow. Her grandfather brought her to the Red Army of the USSR. Before joining the mafia, she was in the Army. As well as a scar on her face can help to identify her. The scar appeared by the burn marks. In the anime, she often smokes a cigar. The only one to gain respect for Revy is her.

The Japanese voice for the character is played by the Japanese actress, voice actress, and narrator Mami Koyama. Mami is affiliated with Aoni Production.

Also, the Japanese voice for the character is provided by the Canadian voice actress Patricia Drake.

5. Edith Blackwater

Blackwater is known as Eda. As well as she is the nun of Rip-Off Church. Despite being a nun, she involves in underground and smuggling organizations. Before she arrived in the Church, she was born in Alabama. Rock was also helped by her, to get Caxton out of Roanapur. Furthermore, she is a good friend of Revy.

The Japanese voice for the character is voiced by the Japanese voice actress Jun Karasawa.

The English voice for the character is provided by the American voice actress Lisa Ann Beley.

6. Dutch

Dutch is the leader of Black Lagoon Trading company. Also, he was a former boat crewman of the United States Marine Corps. During his career, he found Black Lagoon. Moreover, he is a muscular American-African boy. For his past service, he has the respect of Balalaika. Generally, he avoids high-risk jobs because they can cause death. Also, he is a negotiator of Lagoon Company.

The Japanese voice for the character is provided by the Japanese actor and voice actor Tsutomu Isobe.

7. Frederica Sawyer

Frederica Sawyer is also known as Sawyer the cleaner. Though she is a cleaner, she acts very brutally while executing the people. During her job, she dresses like a surgeon. At other times she wears the normal dress. Because her throat is cut, she speaks with the help of an electrical medium called the electrolarynx. As she is an assassin, she uses fire fists in her combats.

The Japanese voice for the character is contributed by the Japanese voice actress Asami Yaguchi.

Heading towards the English dubbed version, the American voice actress and singer Saffron Henderson provided the voice.

8. Chaka

Chaka is one of the members who work for the Washimine Group. Also, he used to call himself Wild West. Even more, he seems very arrogant and an idiot. Because of her short-sightedness, she lost her reputation.

Yukio then becomes the leader of the group. He kidnapped Revy and later used him as a bidding with the help of a street gang. To get his position back he wants to win the bidding.

The Japanese voice actor, Wataru Takagi voiced the character. Wataru works with Arts Vision as a voice talent. Some of his projects include Detective Conan, Slayers Try, and Great Teacher Onizuka.

Whereas, the English voice for the character is provided by the American voice actor Jonathon Holmes.

9. Elroy

Elroy is a money-oriented person in South Africa. Balalaika hired him to kill Gretel. Elroy’s 34-year-old married son lives in South Africa. Recently, he is diagnosed with cancer.

The Japanese voice actor, Masaru Ikeda portrayed the character in the anime. Currently, Ikeda works with the Tokyo Actor’s Consumer’s Cooperative Society as a voice actor. In this anime world, he is popular for providing a voice for anime like Death Note, One Piece, and Night Raid.

The Canadian voice actor, Ron Halder voiced the character. Apart from being a voice artist, he is also an actor by profession.

10. Elvis

Elvis is the leader of the Cartel, Neveral Cartel. He was born in Miami, Florida. He is very cruel by nature which can be also seen in his works in Roanapur.

After that, he kills Leo by shooting him in the back of the head. And asks Jane to provide him with the money in two days. While he and his friends keep on playing card, Jane escapes and run away. He with his men chase Jane by car.

The Japanese voice actor, Shinpachi Tsuji provided his voice to the character. Also, the English voice for the character is provided by the Canadian voice actor, Paul Dobson.

11. Hänsel and Gretel

Hänsel and Gretel are twin assasin. Roanapur’s Italian gang leader hired them to kill Balalaika and their rival gang. They both have similar hair and eyes. Balalaika captures Hänsel but didn’t kill her. As he wants Hänsel to be tortured. And watch him bleed to death.

The Japanese voice for the Hänsel and Gretel is provided by Japanese voice actresses Omi Minami and Tomoko Kaneda.

Whereas, the Canadian voice actress,  Ashleigh Ball voiced the character along with Jocelyne Loewen.
